Capstone Project Update

I will continue to update this page as I am better able to articulate my thoughts. For now, here are my written notes out of a journal.

COMMON THREAD
Textiles
Don’t give them what they want
  • Your body
Liberation is not only freedom from fabric
  • Liberation might be an embrace of material
  • Hijab (and modest dressing) is a physical boundary between your sacredness and mankind
Clichéd and stereotypical presenting just reframed as liberation
Sexualized behavior is rewarded by a patriarchal society
When the culture gives women a single way to be sexy, it’s hardly a woman’s choice to adapt to it
Feminism as individual self expression defined by the patriarchy is not liberation

Two sub topics
Eastern v western interpretations of textiles
The more you wear the more oppressed you are (concession: there are cases where modesty is oppression) v the less you wear the more liberated you are (concession: you still exist within the confinement of the patriarchy so your bareness is still most pleasing to men)

History of fabric with technology

Industrial revolution
We use fabrics to soften our technology (i.e. cloth in your car, bands of fabric on a speaker, computer case, etc.)
But fabric is the original technology and sparked most early invention (contrary to what we believe about steel or coal as the instigator)
Fabric is feminine, technology is male
Women are meant to soften men, be sweet, take the edge off
